6th Annual Harrisonburg & Rockingham Bike-Walk Summit
“Engaging to Build Walkable and Bikeable Communities”
STAUNTON (October 30, 2017) — The Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Metropolitan Planning Organization (HRMPO), in partnership with the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, will conduct the 2018 Harrisonburg & Rockingham Bike-Walk Summit from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm on November 3, 2016, on the James Madison University (JMU) campus.
Each year, the Bike-Walk Summit brings together a broad range of partners who are working to make Harrisonburg and Rockingham County a great biking and walking community to live in and visit. This year the theme is “Engaging to Create Walkable and Bikeable Communities,” with a keynote address from Fionnuala Quinn, Founder and Director of The Bureau of Good Roads. Her talk and interactive, hands-on sessions will focus on engaging whole communities in the planning and design process to create successful walking and biking facilities that meet the public’s needs. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all attendees. The JMU Institute for Constructive Advocacy and Dialogue will facilitate the Summit.
The summit will begin with a social breakfast for attendees, and include a networking lunch. In addition to the keynote address from Ms. Quinn, there will be a welcome address from JMU Special Assistant to the President, Mike Davis. A series of short videos will showcase accomplishments related to bicycling and walking in the region in the past year. Throughout the day there will be interactive sessions with attendees to generate ideas for the community based on what we learn about building engagement in the bicycling and walking planning process. Attendees will also develop priorities and set goals to grow public engagement. A summit social will follow at Pale Fire Brewing.
