Volunteers Needed for Pre-Bike Month Kids Events
Excitement is mounting at local schools as we head into spring. To gear up for this year’s bike month I am looking for volunteers who are interested in helping with a few bike rodeos and National Bike to School Day. Getting more kids on bikes during April will hopefully spur bike month participation and give kids the skills they need to bike on through the summer!
Volunteers are needed during the following events:
Waterman Elementary School’s 2nd Annual Bike Rodeo- April 9 from 3:45-5pm*. Volunteers can help with an obstacle course, bike maintenance 101, lead the slowest bike race, and give safety tips and practice with kids. (*Schools decided to extend this half day, changing our start time to 3:45pm. Rain date April 18, 3:45-5pm)
**CANCELLED**Keister Elementary School’s first ever Bike Week- April 24, 25 and 26. During PE classes we will lead 1st-4th graders through the same activities as above. Schedule is throughout the day from 8:50-3:30pm. Let me know if you’re interested and I can give more specifics. **Due to reasons beyond our control, we had to cancel this event at Keister. We hope to do something later in May or next fall in it’s place.
Thomas Harrison Middle School’s Bike to School Day!– May 8 from 7:15-8am. Students are encouraged to bike to/from school that day. SBC will be out in force doing bike tune-ups. Volunteers are needed to accompany neighborhood bike trains to get to school that morning as well as to hand out snacks to students and sign them in as they arrive.
Bikes Needed: We are still in need of small children’s bikes, some even with training wheels if possible! We can take working, gently used bikes off your hands.
Please contact Becky Johnston at Rebecca.Johnston.7361@rhcc.com or call (540) 564-7388 to volunteer or to schedule your gently used bike pick-up. Thank you!!

Becky, what a great post, and what an awesome picture of Cora, Ruby and Ana! They look heroic. Like they’re going to rescue ET, maybe. And what cool events you’ve got going–how great that Keister Elementary is having a bike WEEK. Thank you so much for organizing. I will email you to help out 🙂
Yes, those kiddos are heroic. I biked that hill this morning and thought how in shape those gals and guys are for doing it 5 days a week! I look forward to having you on board with the upcoming events! Thanks.
